Peer Groups and Camps

These 6-week, peer groups are for children ages 8-11 and are designed to allow participants to show up authentically and form genuine connections with peers. The group leaders will guide and encourage interactions among the children and will make it a positive and uplifting experience for each participant.

Each group will work together to decide on the rules so that everyone feels safe and included. They will also plan the themes together so that their interests and hobbies can be explored. Some topics may be art, board games, Legos, etc.

The Peer Group Facilitator, Ms. Rachel Gottfried MA CCC-SLP, will guide interactions as needed so that all participants feel welcomed and valued, and can interact in the way that feels the most natural for them. Those peers who are a little chattier may be gently guided to allow room for others to share their thoughts, while the quieter or more anxious peers will be offered opportunities to join in while never being forced or put on the spot. Participants will have access to fidgets, movement breaks, and a quiet corner if needed. Children will learn how to advocate for themselves, how to solve problems in group settings, and will be given a platform for sharing their interests and passions. Participants will have an opportunity to share their contact information so that they might socially interact outside of the group. There will be a social skills theme each week of camp such as advocating for yourself, reciprocal conversations, handling conflict, understanding perspectives, etc.

Caregivers are encouraged to let us know of any sensory needs or supports that may be helpful for their child(ren). At the conclusion of the session, each family will receive a summary of the group activities, how their child did in the group, and will be provided with suggestions to continue to encourage growth at home. These groups will be on-going to provide these opportunities throughout the year and to allow budding friendships to continue!
